What are Forged Pipe Fittings?

Forged Pipe Fittings (Thread Fittings and Socket Weld Fittings) are made in accordance to ASME (American Society of Mechanical Engineers) B16.11, MSS-SP-79\ 83\ 95\97 and BS3799 standards, and are used to connect nominal bore schedule pipes and pipelines. The applications range from chemical, petrochemical, power generation and OEM manufacturing industry as well other applications where vibration, high pressure or extremely corrosive conditions exist.

 

Material:

 

Forged pipe fittings are generally available in two materials: Carbon Steel (ASTM A105 material spec), and Stainless Steel SS316 (ASTM A182 material spec). Connection Types:

 

Class 3,000 and 6,000 forged pipe fittings comes in two types of connection: Socket Weld, or Threaded. NPT (National Pipe Thread) is the most common thread type although BSPP (British Standard Pipe Parallel thread) is also being available for certain parts like Full Couplings, Hex Bushings and Hex Nipples. Socket weld connection is significantly more popular than threaded since most applications call for completely sealing off a line and eliminating all possibility of leakage.

 

The fittings are normally produced with the same connection for all sides of the same fitting. That means, a socket weld fitting will have socket weld connection on all sides. Should different connection ends be required, additional machining could be possible but at a higher cost and a longer lead time.

A lathe chuck is a special kind of clamp used on a lathe. These chucks hold objects that are cylindrical, radial, or irregularly shaped, gripped by what are called lathe chuck jaws. Used on wood lathes for woodworking or on machinists’ lathes for machining, chuck jaws hold steady the objects to be worked on. On some lathes, it is the chuck that does the rotating while a power tool is steadily applied to the object in its grip. The lathe chuck jaws are usually tightened into place on the object using a chuck key, a t-shaped wrench.

 

One type of lathe chuck is called a centering cylindrical stock chuck, having circles on its faceplate that can be used to center an object being machined. The lathe chuck jaws open wide to accept the object and center it, then the individual jaws are tightened snugly, yet carefully, so that there won’t be any movement whatsoever of the object once rotation begins. A dial indicator mounted on the lathe centers the object and measures to be certain that each of the individual jaws is bearing an equal grip on the object. Relatively large movements of the object eventually become only slight movements, as it is perfectly aligned and centered.

 

Another type of lathe chucks are specialty chucks. These lathe chucks come in two-jaws, six-jaws and eight-jaws configurations. The right choice of lathe chuck jaws for these depends on the type and heaviness of the objects to be handled, and on how important perfect centering and tightness of grip will be. For example, six-jaw self-centering lathe chuck jaws are used for thin-walled work pieces or for gripping finished edges of work pieces, and the large number of jaws enables less pressure per grip in order to protect a finish. Two-jaw chucks are available in a soft jaw aluminum configuration to work more like a stop to hold custom fixtures for tooling. Most chucks have one resident jaw as a master jaw, but the other lathe chuck jaws can be purchased or replaced separately at any time.

 

Three-jaw chucks have both inside and outside lathe chuck jaws with concave surfaces and are used for handling large diameter objects of circular or hexagonal shape. One type of three-jaw chuck is called a drill chuck, and it is for specialty self-centering to hold drill bits and other similar rotary tools. Another three-jaw chuck is the one colloquially called Super Chuck, which uses ball thrust bearings, has high torque and is used in high precision work. Three-jaws chucks can’t hold irregularly shaped pieces or any square shapes, yet the variety of types of three-jaw chucks for different purposes keeps them in high use.

 

Another high precision lathe chuck jaws configuration are the four-jaws chucks. These have time-consuming individually setting jaws, yet can turn in offset position as when turning cams. Four-jaw chucks can hold square, rectangular and nearly any irregularly shaped object for high-precision work. They also have more grips for handling round shapes or thin walled work pieces that need more numerous, gentler grips to spread the tension against the surface.

The Differences between CAT, BT and HSK Tool Holder

BT & CAT tool holder – often referred to as “V-flange” by tooling manufacturers and machinists alike- is the most accepted and widely used standard of conventional milling tooling in the U.S. today. The “CAT” designation was developed by industrial conglomerate Caterpillar Inc. in order to standardize their machinery and has become the U.S. national standard. The “BT” series, on the other hand, is the Japanese equivalent and is more prevalent internationally, particularly in Europe since it was developed there. CAT and BT series holders are similar in that they both have the same 7:24 taper ratio and require the use of a retention knob, or pull stud, to secure the holder within the machine spindle (CAT tool holders generally have a standard thread while BT’s are mostly metric).

 

The difference between the two styles lies in the flange design where the BT bottom flange is thicker and engaged differently by the tool changer. Typical variations are CAT40, CAT50, BT30, and BT40 where the numerical portion signifies the taper dimension (the larger the number, the larger the holder). Because they are so similar, many CNC machine manufacturers and industrial tool suppliers offer the choice between CAT and BT spindles and there is some debate as to the efficacy of doing so. So why choose one over the other? Ease of tooling procurement. CAT tool holders are widely distributed in the U.S. while BT holders can be more easily procured internationally. But functionally speaking, there is little difference between the two.

 

There are some important limitations to note, however, when using CAT and BT systems. Both engage the CNC machine with a single-contact surface with a small gap existing between the flange of the tool holder and the spindle face. As a result, there can be inaccuracies that result from higher speeds that exceed 800 RPM’s, as centrifugal forces pull the holder up toward the spindle. While balanced holders help alleviate this problem, newer CNC clamping systems without this imitation- such as HSK- are rapidly gaining traction.

 

HSK is a German standard- translating to “Hollow Shank Taper” in English- that bears no resemblance to the CAT and BT styles mentioned above. The taper is much shorter and engages the spindle in a different fashion (i.e. no retention knob) with a cleverly designed dual contact method. The HSK system contains an internal clamping mechanism providing both radial and axial connection (thus the “dual contact”) providing a tremendous rigidity lacking in most CAT/BT set-ups. This allows for improved repeatability leading to increased tool life in high speed machining applications- the Holy Grail for production manufacturers.

 

Within the HSK family, there are 6 main styles (designated by letters “A-F” for differing applications) with HSK-63A being the most widely used today. While this style is becoming more popular, it does have some limitations. Due to the newer technology, HSK machine and tooling costs remain expensive and thus is not as popular among smaller manufacturers. Understanding the Differences between Automotive and Industrial Greases

In short, there is really no difference between automotive and industrial greases. Grease selection will depend on the desired application and performance.

 

In regards to grease and its application, there are critical elements used in the formulation process that must be considered. These elements include the thickener type and concentration, lubricant type, viscosity and additive package. Greases are rated by the National Lubricating Grease Institute (NLGI) and range from 000 through 6. An NLGI 2 grade is typically the specification used in automotive greases.

 

One of the only differences between industrial and automotive greases is that a two-letter designation is often used in the automotive industry to specify the type of grease to employ. For example, greases may be rated as GC or LB. GC is recommended for axle and wheel bearing grease, while LB is the industry standard for chassis grease used on tie-rod ends, ball joints, U-joints and control-arm shafts.

 

Regardless of the application, greases should reduce friction and wear, protect against corrosion, seal bearings from water and contaminants, and resist leakage. While one of the main reasons for grease failure is selecting the wrong type of grease for the intended application, there may also be other causes, such as incompatibility resulting in excessive softening of the grease, contamination leading to excessive wear or applying too little or too much grease for the application.

 

For instance, in off-road equipment, the environment generally is harsh with a variety of factors to take into account including water, dirt, poor seals and heavy loads. In this type of situation, grease selection is key. You will need a grease with good rust protection, film strength and water resistance.

 

Bearings normally see less contamination but often experience wide variations of speed and temperature. In this case, you should choose grease with excellent oxidation stability, exceptional mechanical stability and good performance over a wide temperature range.

 

In summary, the constituents of industrial and automotive greases may be quite similar and should be treated as such. The point is that no matter the application in which grease is used, it is critical to know how to properly select a grease while keeping in mind all of the important parameters.

PET, TPU, or Tempered Glass – all you need to know to choose a screen protector

A bit of a disappointment in the past, today’s screen protectors are easier to install, cheaper, and better than ever in every aspect. There are three varieties – PET protective film, TPU (polyurethane), and our undisputed favorite – tempered glass. And then there are two methods to get them on your display – dry and wet. So here’s more about how screen protectors work and what they offer.

 

PET Film

 

Obviously, PET doesn’t stand for a dog or a cat. It means “polyethylene terephthalate” – a type of plastic that’s available in many variations depending on specific applications. In the manufacturing industry, it’s used for mundane stuff like liquid and food containers. But this doesn’t mean that PET protective films are glorified water bottle plastic. They consist of polyester film with a scratch resistant matte coating on one side and a silicone adhesive on the other. Quality ones are quite clear and add a functional anti-scratch layer to your screen, but have no impact protection. And their scratch-resistance isn’t better than what Gorilla Glass already has – it’s limited to fingernails, coins and keys. They are cheap, and usually come in packs of three or more. Their downside is that plastic is the easiest to discolor from sun rays and oil buildup from your fingers, and it doesn’t feel as nice as glass does to the touch.

 

If you have a cheaper or older phone, or you’re fine with the most basic and affordable screen protection, get a PET protector. The manufacturer doesn’t really matter, but if you have a soft spot for a particular brand, there’s no reason not to go with theirs. Chances are that protectors from established brands will be better cut-out for your device and won’t leave loose edges that can catch on to your clothes and peel the protector away (it has happened before).

 

TPU

 

TPU (thermoplastic polyurethane) is next in the screen protector food chain. This is chemically-enhanced plastic whose properties include scratch resistance, elasticity, oil and grease resistance, and increased toughness. Since the material is elastic, it has limited “self-healing” abilities. This means that its slight softness gives it the power to absorb non-extreme impact, such as most drops and lighter scratches, while retaining all or most of its original composition. For example, lighter scratches usually leave just a small dent in the soft plastic, which slowly returns to normal.

 

The “military-grade” tag most TPU protectors proudly carry is worthy of an explanation. One manufacturer says that this material is used “to protect jetfighters”. And what do you know, it’s true! Skim through this Aerospace Surface Protection brochure – it’s full of polyurethane protective tapes used for “aircraft and windmill leading edge protection”. However, getting a TPU case or screen protector doesn’t guarantee it’s made of the same quality of material. But your smartphone also isn’t a fighter jet, right?

 

If you are willing to pay a slightly higher price, a TPU protector is, logically, better choice than PET film. At the very least, it’s going to provide better impact protection (although you shouldn’t be pushing your chances). It’s also nicer to the touch, although it isn’t glass-smooth. Arguably, the best part is that you’ll get to explain to your friends and acquaintances how your phone has “fighter jet protection”. Pretty cool, huh?

 

Tempered glass

 

Protection with a temper! Tempered glass (TG) screen protectors are the absolute best you can buy. Material-wise, a high-quality TG protector is multi-layered, usually starting with shock absorbent silicon on the bottom layer, followed by PET film, and an optically clear adhesive to ‘sandwich’ the previous two layers with the next two, which are tempered glass and oleophobic coating. All of this scratch, oil, and shock protecting goodness is compressed into a <0.4mm-thick sheet that’s no harder to apply than a PET or TPU protector, and none heavier or otherwise obnoxious.

 

A glass protector is superior to its alternatives in every way. It has better light transmittance, making for a clearer display. It’s anti-reflective and glare reducing. It has oleophobic coating, which heavily reduces fingerprints. It has the smooth feel of actual glass under your fingertips. Unlike Gorilla Glass 3, it resists sand scratches, making it the only viable option for beachgoers. And let’s talk about shock protection. T-glass protectors boast a material hardness rating of 8H to 9H, meaning they are hard enough to resist scratches from anything that’s not topaz or corundum (extremely hard aluminum oxide). Yet, they aren’t completely shatter-proof. Since this is toughened glass we’re talking about, in the event of a fatal drop, the protector will absorb all the damage and break into tiny shards. Chances are pretty good that your display will end up unscathed underneath. Thus, instead of having to replace the entire screen, you’ll only have to get a new protector. This is easier on both your soul and your wallet.

 

As you probably expected, tempered glass protectors are the most expensive kind. Most renowned brands can charge up to $40 for their products. And although that’s money well spent if you are rocking an expensive flagship smartphone, excellent tempered glass protectors can be found for less than $15 online.

 

Dry vs Wet Mount

 

There are two methods for installing a screen protector – dry and wet. The method is usually specified on the box.

 

The dry method keeps the protector glued to the screen with static electricity. There’s no adhesive involved, and the application is very straightforward. In short, you’re supposed to enter a dust-free environment (either outside, or in your humid bathroom, preferably naked to prevent dust specs from your clothes), clean your phone thoroughly, align the protector and apply it. After a few tries, you will end up with near-perfect results. You don’t have only one shot at this. Most dry-application protectors will let you carefully lift them off the phone and take care of misalignment and dust particles before trying again. Some even come with an electrostatic paper band to help you get rid of annoying dust.

 

The wet application method works by spraying liquid on the underside of the screen protector. It’s a convoluted and awkward ordeal. You’re tasked with the very precise placement of a thin, wet sheet of plastic – quite frustrating, because the liquid adds weight and get the protector folding and dancing in every direction but the right one. Allegedly, wet protectors are easier to place without forming air bubbles or trapping dust, and are more resistant to peeling. If you mess up the installation at first, they too give second chances at applying them correctly. But all the phone drying, protector re-moistening and getting rid of excess liquid between it and screen is quite the patience test.

With so many options available, and at very fair prices, getting a screen protector for your device has become a no-brainer. PET film products are the best choice for basic screen protection. TPU protectors can be a bit rare, but they have the best ratio of affordability and toughness. Finally, Tempered Glass protectors offer the ultimate in protection and feel, but they are the priciest of the bunch. Still, even the most expensive ones make sense for flagship smartphones and tablets.
