What is Lock Washer?

The locking washers can be made of metal or non-metal materials. The purpose in using them is to keep nuts and bolts from vibrating or friction loose. When the head is fastened into the hole the internal teeth will help grab the surface, while at the same time resisting against the force of the washer being compressed.

 

  1. External Tooth – External tooth have teeth on the outer dimension of the washer so that they can actually bite into the surface that it is put on, and the inside is still a cylindrical hole. They are designed for fasteners who have a bigger head. When the head is fastened into the hole the external teeth will help grab the surface, while at the same time resisting against the force of the washer being compressed.

 

  1. Flat – Flat washers are used for basic applications, where the hole is cot directly in the center of the washer. Standard or metric, it does not matter they can accommodate all shapes and sizes.

 

  1. Flat Retaining – These have multiple holes in them so that you can screw or bolt down the washer, and the second hole would be for running your wire to the screw or bolt.

Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET)

Polypropylene (PP)

Polypropylene is a widely used plastic. You likely have polypropylene plastic in your fridge and cupboards right now: it’s regularly used in reusable food storage containers. It’s also the resin used to make yogurt containers and other single-serving tubs.

 

PP plastics are approved for food contact. They are inert materials and do not present a health hazard to the consumers. The FDA began to approve recycled polypropylene as food-safe in 2013.

 

Polypropylene’s high melting point makes it suitable for microwaveable food containers. It’s nonvolatile and doesn’t react to liquids, acids, or bases, so PP food container is perfect to store a wide variety of foods.

 

High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE)

Virgin HDPE is a safe plastic for food contact. The FDA has sanctioned recycled HDPE for food contact on a case-by-case basis for over 20 years.

 

HDPE resin produces plastic that is corrosion-resistant and absorbs little moisture, making it well-suited for storing beverages. Also, HDPE containers don’t leach chemicals into their contents.

 

Low-Density Polyethylene (LDPE)

LDPE plastics are similar to HDPE plastics but are known for being less rigid. They are popular in squeeze bottles, such as used for ketchup and mustard; plastic films, such as those that wrap commercial baked goods and meat; and six-pack rings.

 

Virgin LDPE resins are safe for food contact. While recycled LDPE/PP blends have been approved for food contact by the FDA on two occasions, materials made from 100% PCR LDPE resin are not cleared for food contact.

 

LDPE has good chemical resistance, high impact strength, and strong wear absorption. Like PET and HDPE plastics, LDPE can hold your food products without leaching any harmful materials or allowing microorganisms to permeate.

 

Polycarbonate (PC)

Polycarbonate is commonly used in water-cooler bottles, baby bottles, and reusable water containers.

 

There’s been a lot of discussion the past few years about the food safety of polycarbonate because there is bisphenol A (BPA) in the resin). BPA is rumored to be hazardous to health. Because of the public scrutiny, it has been extensively tested. The average consumer intake of BPA is very low, and the chemical does not accumulate in the body. No health risks are known to exist at such small levels, and the FDA has concluded it is safe for food contact. Some manufacturers have substituted FDA-approved co-polyester to provide clear containers that are BPA-free.

Thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) is an elastomer that is fully thermoplastic. Like all thermoplastic elastomers, TPU is elastic and melt-processable. When these isocyanates are combined with short-chain diols, they become the hard block. Normally it is aromatic, but when color and clarity retention in sunlight exposure is a priority, an aliphatic hard segment is often used.

 

The soft segment can either be a polyether or polyester type, depending on the application. For example, wet environments generally require a polyether-based TPU while oil and hydrocarbon resistance often demand a polyester-based TPU. For even greater utility, the molecular weight, ratio and chemical type of the hard and soft segments can be varied.

 

This versatility results from the unique structure of TPU that results in high resilience, good compression set, plus resistance to impacts, abrasions, tears, weather, and even hydrocarbons. TPU offers flexibility without the use of plasticizers as well as a broad range of hardness’s and high elasticity. In fact, TPU bridges the material gap between rubbers and plastics. Its range of physical properties enables TPU to be used as both a hard rubber and a soft engineering thermoplastic. TPU’s can be sterilized, welded, easily processed, colored, painted, printed, die-cut and slitted. They have low temperature flexibility and, in some grades, exhibit biocompatibility, hydrolytic stability, optical clarity, plus flame retardant and anti-static properties.

For example, when mixed with glass fiber or mineral fillers, TPU’s properties of abrasion resistance, paintability, high impact strength and good low temperature flexibility can all become enhanced, and the compound also demonstrates good fuel and oil resistance and high melt flow characteristics.

 

In addition, TPU is an outstanding contributor of polymer blends. When added to polyvinyl chloride (PVC), TPU improves compression set, abrasion resistance and low temperature flexibility.

 

When added to polycarbonate or acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS), a TPU resin with a nominal flexural modulus of 18,000, produces compounds with flexural modulus values up to 150,000 psi. In this way, specialized compounds can be made that improve the properties of polycarbonate or ABS or other plastics.
