Solenoid Valves – What Should We Know About Them?

Have you ever used an industrial air hammer? Have you checked on your automotive starter system at one point or another? Have you ever seen an electric bell assembly? If you answer yes to any of these questions, then you probably know what a solenoid valve is.

Solenoid valves are electromechanical valves that are controlled by stopping or running an electrical current through a solenoid, in order to change the state of the valve. A solenoid is a coil of wire that is magnetized when electricity runs through it. The solenoid valve makes use of this solenoid in order to activate a valve, thus controlling water flow, airflow and other things with electricity. Basically, there are three types of solenoid valves: the general-purpose type, low-pressure steam type and the high pressure steam type.

Solenoid valves are composed of several parts such as the solenoid coil, electrical connector, bonnet nut, seal cartridge, O-rings, end connector, body and union nut. All these components are critical to the overall performance of solenoid valves. If any malfunction, it will affect the entire operation of the automotive starter system, as well as the industrial air hammer and the electric bell assembly. That is why this should always be maintained and regularly checked in order to keep the solenoid valves functioning at their best.

But just like any other parts of the starter system, air hammer and electric bell, the solenoid valve can get damaged after a period of time. Thus, a replacement solenoid valve will be needed. It’s a good thing that many dealers offer quality solenoid valves at affordable prices. When selecting a solenoid valve, be sure to consider the valve type, aperture size, pressure rating, coil voltage and type of connection to each port.

Summary, solenoid valves are an efficient method of converting electrical signals into pneumatic functions. Applying electricity to the solenoid quickly directs air through the valve and into the circuit.

Introduction to the Hydraulic Control Valve

The prosperity of the modern industry has been doing great favors to our daily life and the industrial process. Actually, there comes a great variety of the valve types to meet the increasing requirements. Among the various types, the hydraulic control valve has been playing an important role in regulating the water.

The hydraulic control valve is the valve which is used to control the pressure. Generally speaking, it consists of a main valve and the matching accessories like the catheter, pilot valve, needle valve, ball valve and the pressure gauge. As to achieve some specified specifications, the manufacturers would produce various types of the hydraulic control valve according to the different operating functions and working conditions. For example, there are many further divided species. They are remote control floating ball valve, reducing valve, check valve, flow control valve and pump control valve and so on. Now, the details for two specified valve classified by the structure are introduced in the following.

Although with different structures, the two types works under the same principle which means the pressure difference. The one is called as the diaphragm type and the other one is called as the piston type. The pilot valve would lead the diaphragm or the piston to work. Then, the force gained by the water would start to adjust the device of the main valve to be totally opened or closed or under regulation. Or it can be said in details as follows. When the water above the diaphragm or the piston is poured into the lower area, the pressure below would be greater than that of the upper area. At this moment, the device of the main valve is pushed to be totally open. On the contrary, the device would be under the state of totally closed. And it the pressure is in medium scale, the valve is regulating the flow. No matter what, if the all parts cooperate together well, the valve would be able to perform under the pressure difference.

As we all know that the water project is generally important on all fields. Therefore, the hydraulic control valves continue to bring benefits. And in fact, there are many trials to improve the performance of this kind of the valve in order to service the future water project better.

Why A Steel Ball Valve Is A Better Choice Anytime

Ball valves are valves that have spherical discs as part of the flow control. The sphere contains a hole or a port to ensure that when it is in line with the two ends, flowing occurs and the flow is blocked when the valve is closed meaning that the hole remains perpendicular to the ends. The ball valves offered by best valve suppliers and manufacturers are classified into trunnion mounted and floating ball valves and they are made of different materials including steel.

The steel ball valve is a very good choice for water and gas lines. They can also be used effectively in different industrial areas including oil, mining and petrochemical. Over the years steel has become a top choice for buyers and this is probably as a result of the many advantages it has over other ball valve types.

Steel is efficient

This material for a ball valve offers a secure tight fit wherever it is installed. It reduces leakage greatly thereby increasing its efficiency. They shut water and gas with precision even when they have not been in use for a long time. They make reliable options as far as service delivery is concerned.

Steel is resilient

It is a metal that is extremely hard giving it a higher resilience as compared to other materials used in the manufacturing of ball valves. This is a great advantage especially when considering the amount of pressure in the areas where they are used. The materials offer a high capacity that others might not always manage and does not end up suffering damage and this makes it reliable and safer.

Steel is durable

This is another reason why the best ball valve suppliers offer steel options. The truth is that the material can effectively handle cold and hot temperatures and high levels of pressure without any problems making it one of the most durable materials anyone can settle for. The stainless steel bearings are rust resistant, thus greatly reducing on maintenance requirement. This adds to the durability of valves.

Steel is corrosion resistant

Corrosion can be a huge disadvantage especially when dealing with frequent water or fluid contact. The valves made using stainless steel alloys however resist rust and corrosion giving them the capacity to withstand wear and tear through such contact. Those in coastal areas will also find these valves very effective choices.

Steel is low in maintenance

As long as the fixtures are properly installed, they will not call for much maintenance, but still perform at their best levels. It is as a result of the high resilience leading to heightened efficiency and low failure rates. Costs are cut immensely, making it a better choice any time.

Steel is cost effective

The truth is that stainless steel valves make affordable fittings hence they are easier to acquire even in residential piping. Considering how long lasting they are, they make amazing cost effective investments in both industrial and residential installations.

To get the best results with your selection, always settle for a reputable valve supplier. A good ball valve supplier is one that offers a huge variety to cover all valve needs. Making important considerations will help you choose the best valve for your needs.

Purpose and Features of PVC Valves

Over the decades, polyvinyl chloride (PVC) valves have penetrated both commercial and domestic domains. PVC valves made with suitable additives provide the desired physical and chemical compatibility. Although they have limited use in high temperature applications, advances in PVC technology have enabled manufacturing of the valves with reasonable tolerance to medium range temperatures. In a similarity with their metal counterparts, plastic valves are machined using similar CNC machining centers and lathes, however the parts of the PVC valves are joined using threaded joints or cement or fastened using fasteners. They can be installed with very little additional help from wrenches.

Purpose of PVC valves:

One of the most common reasons for the failure of conventional metal-based valves is corrosion. Corrosion affects industries such as chemical processing, nuclear power generation, onshore and offshore oil and gas, underground pipeline, water treatment, sewage handling and treatment, highway maintenance, aviation, and metalwork. Moreover, options for a corrective action or a preventive action are limited. Pervasive nature of corrosion in certain industries made them look for alternative options such as PVC valves as they were virtually unaffected by corrosive atmosphere. Furthermore, smooth surfaces are resistant to scaling and allow better flow rates, while external surfaces require no additional coating to protect the shell from environmental damage. PVC valve avert any organic growth, making it suitable for ultra-pure applications such as semiconductor fabrication and manufacturing of polymers. Servicing of the plastic valves is relatively easier since no special tools or tackles are required to disassemble the valves and allows on-site servicing requiring minimal downtime. These features made it desirable in some industries.

Features of PVC valves:

As discussed earlier, PVC valves offer non-corrosive, non-contaminating, and smooth surface for process fluids. Apart from these properties, they are lighter in weight than metal valves of similar sizes. The PVC valves offer resistance to acid along with corrosion and they repel any formation of scale on the surface because of their smoothness. In comparison with metal valves, integration with plastic pipes and fixtures are easier with PVC valves. According to the life cycle assessment of PVC commissioned by the European Commission, the average lifecycle of PVC water pipes range anywhere between 40 and 80 years and thereby a conservative estimate of the PVC valves’ life cycle is close to 10-20 years. This compares favorably to other alternatives because of their use of lesser non-renewable resources i.e. 57% of PVC is derived from salt and the remaining 43% is obtained from oil/gas. Most of the PVC valves can handle pressure of up to 150 lbs./sq.in, which is lower for most piping sizes in the schedule 80 threaded piping system. Due to presence of more than fifty percent chlorine in the PVC, PVC valves are fire-resistant. Even when the valves are burned, they emit hydrogen chloride gas that prevents oxygen from reaching the surface and thereby prevents faster reaction. The valves offer excellent chemical compatibility with salts, alkalis, oxidizing agents, and acids. In addition, they offer reasonable compatibility with organic solvents. Since PVC has easy processing characteristics, the desired specification for the valves can be achieved. PVC valves are relatively more cost effective than metal valves due low weight and lower price of base material. These valves are also highly resistant to ultra violet rays, which makes them suitable for UV sensitive applications such as photographic material. Their no-reaction characteristic with most organic and non-organic material makes them suitable for handling medical and bodily fluids.

Conclusion:

The PVC valves have penetrated both the domestic and commercial market due to their performance characteristics and advantages they offer over the valves made out of other materials.

Hydraulic Pumps (Fluid in Motion)

Hydraulic pumps convert mechanical energy and motion into hydraulic fluid power. The basic idea is very simple: force that is applied at one position is transmitted to another position using an incompressible fluid, like oil, which cannot be compressed but rather is displaced when pressure is applied.

A reservoir, a hydraulic cylinder, and a pump make up the three main parts of a hydraulic pump. Pumping hydraulic fluid from the reservoir into the bottom cavity of the cylinder causes the piston rod to be pushed up, which pushes the fluid in the other cavity back into the reservoir. This procedure pressurizes the chamber and extends the piston to its full length. Pumping hydraulic fluid into the upper chamber of the cylinder pushes the piston rod down, pushing the oil in the other chamber back into the reservoir, completing the cycle.

Popular Hydraulic Pump Types

  • Vane pumps, piston pumps, and gear pumps are the foremost types of hydraulic pumps
  • Gear pumps – uses gears to pump fluid by displacement. Hydraulic gear pumps are one of the most common types of pumps. There are several advantages and disadvantages to gear pumps. The advantages are: high speed, high pressure, and quiet operation. The disadvantages are: the use of four bushings in the liquid area and fixed end clearances.
  • Rotary vane pumps – are positive-displacement. They include a ring mounted inside a cylindrical case. There are a number of radial slots in which sliding vanes are located. Mounted to the case is the ring and the vanes are designed to press against the inside wall of the case. Hydraulic pressure or spring force or centrifugal force as the ring is rotated will cause the vane to be forced against the wall.
  • Axial piston pumps – are positive displacement. There are several pistons in a circular arrangement in a cylinder block.
  • Radial piston pumps – a circular arrangement of hydraulic pistons, and valves which allow pressures greater than 650 Bar (~10,000 psi) to be built.
  • Screw pumps – positive displacement pumps. Have one or more screws that rotate to transfer high or low viscosity fluids along an axis.

Ball Valve History & Mystery

Here is a light hearted history and trivia on the ball valves. Read it and you will never take your natural gas or electricity for granted again, OK so maybe you will…

Ball Valve mystery?

The humble ball valve has a checkered history and somewhat murky origins. It may not be cloak and dagger stuff, but it’s not without mystery… Take a look around to see where the ball valve is indispensable. For example, the ball valves are crucial to the petroleum industry, water, electric power, chemical, paper, pharmaceuticals, food, steel and other fields. If it seems we could not get a long without the ball valve, it’s probably true! Given the importance of the ball valve today, it’s a mystery why it took so long to invent.

Ball Valve history does not go back to ancient Greece or the American Revolution nor does it? The modern ball vale was invented in 1967 or about 1957 according to different sources. Who cares when the ball valve was invented? Besides the patented owner, probably not many people. Still the ball valve was major advancement over plug valves used in the 20th century. The earliest ball valves were commercially available around 1967. For ancient parallels, the ruins of Pompeii turned up a bronze tapered plug quarter turn valve that resembles to the ball valve today. How’s that for a ball valve mystery?

Ball Valve Birth Pains

Ball Valve researchers point to a spherical ball-type valve patented in 1871 led to the invention of today’s ball valve. This ball valve was an all brass valve- brass ball and brass seats. Apparently this ball valve didn’t storm the market and was not mentioned in valve catalogs of the late 1800’s while today’s ball valve is quite a recent invention; the idea for this ball valve has been around about 125 years. The first resilient seated ball valve patent was issued in April, 1945. Legend has it the company’s marketing department could not envision a use for the valve and it was not manufactured. Oh well, that’s the way the ball valve bounces…Given the huge reliance on the ball valve today, it’s a mystery why it took so long for people to invent and use the ball valve.

All about Piston Pumps and Their Beneficial Operations

Piston pumps are there almost everywhere in our lives. But, it’s just that we are not aware of their existence or their usefulness. The axial one are used almost everywhere but they are most useful in the aerospace industry.

Well, before talking about this and its use in the various industry sectors, let us know a few basic things about them. These are nothing but positive displacement pumps that have a number of cylinders arranged in a circular pattern within a cylinder block. This block known as a rotor or a barrel, this is a key component in their assembly. The size and surface texture of this cylinder bores is critical to proper performance and life of the assembly.

This comes in many varieties that include axial radial inline form, radial-piston form, and also in plunger. They also differ based on the type of component they are used like bronze, brass, steel, stainless steel, iron, nickel alloy, or other material.

These pumps are used in lower pressure applications, unlike plunger pumps which are high pressure pumps. Indeed, this provides an excellent solution for many hydraulic oil pumping applications. However, the pumps used in these operations have iron cylinder and piston with a steel piston rod.

Whatever model of piston pumps or pressure washer pumps you intend to buy, always go for manufacturers whose products are acknowledged for high functionality, low power consumption and excellent durability. They should also come with rounded construction that has no drum-type surfaces to amplify noise.

Also, as in a centrifugal pump where restriction or increased head creates reduced flow, a piston pump has a very flat flow performance curve. This may result in blockages, which is very hazardous. Hence, use only piston pumps that have safety devices such as unloaded valves.

A.R. North America provides many industrial products with best quality like piston pumps, plunger pumps, car wash pumps.
